We are the DAWN, the Diverse Academic
Women's Network. When something dawns on
us, we experience a moment of understanding or
a sense of the significance of something. Dawn is
also the moment between the end of the night
and the start of the day. It is a place full of hope
and possibility.

Many university equity and diversity programs assist women to navigate the
prevailing higher education landscape, and to assimilate into the overarching
patriarchal structure rather than to challenge and change the system that
perpetuates inequality.
The DAWN mentoring network challenges the prevailing approaches to
inclusion by addressing the power structures that reinforce and maintain the
low numbers of women, especially those of culturally and linguistically diverse (CaLD) backgrounds, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander backgrounds, and low socioeconomic status (SES) backgrounds in Australian universities. Through mentoring each other, we aim to:

- Challenge the barriers to female academics' participation in the workforce.
- Increase the number of female academics from underrepresented backgrounds in leadership positions in academia.
